Types of Salsa DancingSalsa Dancing comes in several different forms and varieties, that regions have had to develop different styles of salsa, most would agree (or disagree) that the main varieties are:
1) LA/NY salsa Dancing (similar to Puerto Rico salsa) 2) Cuban & Miami-Cuban Salsa Dancing (Includes Rueda) 3) Colombian (Cumbia based) Salsa Dancing 4) Ballroom Mambo & Salsa Dancing Of course there are more styles that are subsets within these listed but they are the most recognized around the world. LA/NY salsa is the most popular style in the US and probably the world as a whole. While there are differences between LA and NY style they have a very similar structure but can look a bit different if you know what to look for. LA tends to be flashier incorporating many dips, fancy arm styling and fancy moves, while tending to be On1. NY has its reputation for being On2 and being smoother utilizing more freestyle footwork. Though many people mix pieces from each and every style as well as having a preference for On1 or On2. |
